Chairman's Address

ANAN FORMATION IN BRIEF

In November 6, 1978 three men met at 15 Mosuro Street, Abulo Oja, Yaba to find solutions to the restrictiveness and cumbersomeness of producing qualitative Chartered Accountants in Nigeria that are very different from the one being used by the Association of Accountants of Nigeria, otherwise known as (AAN).

Their prayers came to fruition when those three men resolved to establish a solid home grown body which would provide a “path” to a recognized professional qualification which is of highest international standard and would be opened to all men and women solely on the basis of education and ability. This association was formally launched on January 1st 1979, and they were able to obtain certificate of memorandum No 2468 under the Act Cap 98, dated September 28, 1983, and finally became the second professional Accounting Association of Nigeria by the Decree 76 of August 25th 1993, now ANAN Act. 76 Cap. A26 LFN 2004.

 

EVOLUTION OF BRANCHES AND SHOMOLU BRANCH IN PARTICULAR

Immediately after the ANAN Act. 76, Cap. A26 LFN of 2004, a strong awareness of the new body was carried out all over Nigeria especially in Lagos State. The main coordinator of the awareness is Mr. R. C. Emelone and that led to the first inauguration of the 1st Branch of the Association in Lagos State on the 24th of February, 1995 at Hall “AI” of the National Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos and Dr. Bayo Ayeni emerged the 1st Chairman of Lagos State Branch, and by history, the only branch then in Nigeria.

However, as a result of the increasing members and the diversity of Lagos, the original branch was split into three autonomous branches namely, Mainland Branch, Ikeja Branch and Shomolu Branch. The three branches were inaugurated at the same day at Sheraton Hotel on 4th June 1997, with Dr. Bayo Ayeni emerging the 1st Chairman of Mainland, Late Mr. Ogunleye for Ikeja and Honourable Oni for Shomolu.

We give God the glory for the solid foundation laid down by these three eminent founding leaders of Branches not only in Lagos State but also in the entire Nigeria.

 

SHOMOLU BRANCH

It is therefore evident that all the three Branches in Lagos were established the same day for the convenience of our members without any one superior to the other.

The Second Chairman is our own Mr. Kunle Binutu, while the 3rds Branch Chairman is Deacon Oyebanji and my humble self standing before you today is the 4th Chairman and by extension the 1st Zonal Chairman of South West of the Branch. I therefore pray that one day we would have council members and President of ANAN from this Branch.

GOALS AND ASPIRATIONS OF THE BRANCH

I seize this opportunity to thank the management of Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for accommodating us in their premises for our monthly meeting and provision of the Hall through the Director of Finance, Mrs. Bimbo Yusuf without any financial commitment.

Our main objectives and our short and long term plans are as follows:

  1. To have the Branch Secretariat within Shomolu axis.
  2. To create awareness in both secondary and higher institutions in Lagos State.
  3. To create effective awareness through both print and electronic media.
  4. To organize regular lectures to train and develop our members on current trends in accounting profession.
  5. To assist the needy members.

QUIZ COMPETITION

We organize quiz competitions among higher institutions.

We are very encouraged with the outcomes of the competitions that we have decided to be organizing it twice in a year.
